WASHINGTON —A new investigation into fake Viagra and erectile dysfunction drugs will be launched today by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA, which is also responsible for the regulatory process, is looking into the risks and safety of these products and their possible negative effects.
The new FDA-led investigation is expected to be launched later today at the agency’s offices in New York, Washington, D. C. The FDA is investigating the use of these products in patients who have not responded to the FDA’s guidance.
FDA officials are looking at an estimated one million online pharmacies, but they are focusing on potentially harmful and potentially ineffective drugs.
The FDA said the investigation is part of its efforts to monitor and minimize risks associated with these products.
“The FDA is committed to the safety and efficacy of these products,” said Acting FDA Commissioner John many years ago. “The agency’s responsibility is to ensure consumers get the right product for their needs.”
The FDA will review its latest safety assessment in the spring of 2015 and will consider its evaluation of the potential risks of the products in the FDA’s review.
“The FDA is committed to the safety of this product,” said Janet Woodcock, director of the agency’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
“The agency has a responsibility to do its part to ensure patients get the right treatment for their condition,” she added.
The FDA says it has not received any adverse events related to the products but is taking a “comprehensive” approach to its safety assessment.
The FDA is also working on a number of additional safety studies and will monitor these, along with other FDA-recommended products, for potential product liability issues. Those risks could lead to product liability lawsuits and other forms of liability.
In the meantime, the FDA has launched a review of its review of the products in question.
“This investigation is designed to ensure that consumers have the information they need to be confident in their right to receive safe, effective and affordable treatment,” FDA’s director of drug review said.
